4 / 5
Translated from swedish: "Midsommar" pulls in many different directions and its lengthy runtime starts to make itself felt after a while. The film isn't really all that unsettling as a horror movie after the opening scenes – it's more twisted, crazy, and entertaining.

Translated from swedish: "Midsommar" is a trip that takes its sweet time, but Ari Aster's Swedish adventure is definitely a dazzling cinematic experience, whether you view it as a mind-bending dark comedy under the midnight sun or a cautionary horror film about how toxic relationships ultimately come back to bite you.

4 / 5
Translated from swedish: "Midsommar" is Ari Aster's second feature film and an important contribution to revitalizing a long-stagnant genre. Together with Jordan Peele, he's well on his way to redefining horror cinema, moving it away from visual splatter and cheap jump scares and into the scariest thing of all: being human.

4 / 5
Translated from swedish: The literal interpretation of pagan traditions, in the most fundamental way, becomes here a dangerous manifestation of what we could call nationalism. It's not Swedishness per se that's frightening here, it's the fundamentalist interpretation of it. And those who are to be ritually punished are, of course, the outsiders.

4 / 5
Translated from swedish: "Midsommar" is a film that freely borrows from others but still speaks with its own voice and combines elements in a way that I find refreshing. It can certainly serve completely different purposes for completely different parts of the audience. And that usually goes a long way.

Translated from swedish: I can't get the movie "Midsommar" out of my head. It has really gotten under my skin. I know it's just horror fantasy and it's both scary and terrifying, but at the same time I see a ton of metaphors for society and the world today.

Translated from swedish: Here we have a completely fantastical ethnographic aesthetic in bright and clear colors that gives the film the visual artistic merit one often finds in really good horror.

Translated from swedish: After countless rituals of questionable nature, the film feels more twisted than unsettling, and the movie's climax is astonishingly hollow. Is "Midsommar" scary? Not really.

3 / 5
Translated from swedish: The more I think about "Midsommar" as a story about letting go of your sorrows and toxic relationships, the more it stands out as highly unique, deeply cathartic, and maybe even brilliant?

3 / 5
Translated from swedish: Ari Aster's intention to make us shudder with horror and discomfort, and essentially try in our minds to shield ourselves from the unbearable act, achieves its purpose.

Translated from swedish: Unfortunately, the story itself isn't as strong as the world that's been built.

Translated from swedish: It never gets particularly scary and overall the movie is very predictable. It's also way too long.

Translated from swedish: A unique horror film where Ari Aster once again succeeds in creating a distinctly unsettling atmosphere that takes center stage. This is a thousand times more effective than any jump-scare out there, and I'd take this type of horror film any day of the week.

Translated from swedish: It's beautiful, darkly comic – and an interesting study in breakups. But is it really that scary?

Translated from swedish: The movie feels stupid time and time again, and calling it pretentious would be the understatement of the century. What Ari Aster is trying to say with this film is beyond me. He himself has said it's inspired by his breakup from a relationship...what that has to do with Swedish midsummer, I have no idea.

Translated from swedish: "Midsommar" is more weird than good, I never found it exciting or scary, if you've seen a lot of horror movies nothing comes as a surprise. The movie is damn too long, it runs for two and a half hours. If it weren't for the fact that the film is fascinatingly bizarre, I would have fallen asleep – or gone home.

Translated from swedish: The American directorial rising star Ari Aster has made a horror film about Swedish midsummer celebrations. Here, schnapps and folk music become nightmare fuel.
