Translated from swedish: The strength lies in the depictions of everyday life in Katwe. How life goes on relentlessly and how joy and sorrow stand side by side there, just as they do everywhere else in the world. This film should be watched because it makes it clear how alike we are as human beings, no matter where we live in the world.

3 / 5
Translated from swedish: "Queen of Katwe" is a captivating story about courage, determination, and resolve, and from a broader perspective, about life itself - even though it happens to be far removed from what we in Sweden are accustomed to.

Translated from swedish: This true Cinderella story about a Ugandan prodigy who became a chess star against all odds has received the classic Disney treatment. For better and worse. The dialogue is stilted, and just as Phiona thinks eight chess moves ahead, you're constantly at least as many steps ahead of the screenplay, which never deviates an inch from its conventional sports drama clichés. But as a family-friendly film without rough edges, "Queen of Katwe" is still a winner. Heartfelt, humanistic and inspiring, with vibrant and lively settings.

Translated from swedish: Mira Nair depicts the vibrant story of how a slum princess became Uganda's uncrowned chess queen. Fine acting elevates the film above the clichés.

3 / 5
Translated from swedish: Chess is tough to make interesting on film. Very little happens. "Queen of Katwe" contains many chess scenes, perhaps too many for an uninformed viewer. Overall, however, Mira Nair has managed to convey that a lot is at stake for Phiona and the children from Katwe in the seemingly undramatic events at the chessboards. This is largely thanks to the film's talented child actors.

Translated from swedish: Unfortunately, the film is far too much a story about what happened, not an intimate portrait of Phiona. I miss the depth, the emotions.

Translated from swedish: The feel-good film "Queen of Katwe" is based on a true story. It's warm and heartfelt, and sometimes quite magnificent – but it also has room for some darkness.

2 / 4
Translated from swedish: It tries to convince us that Anything Is Possible, but nobody talks the way real people do – or, for that matter, the way good movie characters usually talk. They're happy and waving, or they're angry and huffing, or they're sad and crying. Everyone watching the movie knows from the start what they're going to see, and the way the film is written and made doesn't allow for any criticism or interpretation.

1. Göteborgs-Posten
Translated from swedish: Despite its lighthearted feel-good atmosphere, this metaphor-rich story, based on Tim Crothers' book, deepens and grows just like a thrilling chess match of the finest kind.
