Review: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One

Ethan Hunt is back in a grand action adventure!

The film with the longest title of the year has premiered - but is it worth watching?

Plot

The world is facing a new threat; a powerful artificial intelligence has started infiltrating computer systems worldwide, seemingly without doing anything, at least for now. However, there seem to be two keys that can be used to shut it down - keys that several different groups are now trying to acquire.

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt.

Ethan Hunt's new mission is not only to retrieve the two keys before everyone else, but also to figure out where these keys are actually supposed to be used - because it seems like no one knows.

Cast

The lead role in the Mission: Impossible series, undercover agent Ethan Hunt, is played as usual by Tom Cruise. By his side, as in previous films, are Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson - and among them, the small-time thief Hayley Atwell appears, who may be in over his head (the character, that is, the actor does an excellent job).

Rebecca Ferguson returns in the role of Ilsa.

As usual in these films, all the actors give everything they have, and it shows in every scene. There is a really high energy that truly radiates action movie - it's excellent.

Intense Action

You already know that the Mission: Impossible films revolve around action scenes and insane stunts, and this film is no exception; they run on trains, flip cars, jump on motorcycles, and parachute - and they do it for real.

Tom Cruise performs his own stunts in the film - each one crazier than the last.

Surprisingly, a lot of their crazy stunts are done for real, so if you think something is fake, you better check out the behind-the-scenes material; you will probably be amazed at what they put the actors (especially Cruise) through.

Verdict

So how good is the film? I find it a bit difficult that it's only the first of two films, while the film is already very long. In total, this story will take about 6 hours to tell - with a year-long wait halfway through (the next film premieres in 2024).

Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell find themselves in a precarious situation.

On the other hand, it's refreshing to see real stunts and a well-directed action film like this, so I'm a bit unsure about the rating. The film is undoubtedly worth watching for anyone who enjoys action, has a historical fondness for Mission: Impossible, or just likes Tom Cruise in general. This is the best action film you can see in theaters right now, without a doubt.

Premiering today

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One has its English cinema premiere today, on July 12, 2023.

To Be Continued

As you may have understood by now, the story continues in the sequel; part two is titled Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part Two and will premiere next year, on June 26, 2024.

The good

  •   Many well-executed action scenes
  •   Impressive stunts

The Bad

  •   A bit too much dialogue at times
  •   First part of two films (no conclusion)
  •   Too long for its own good

Score

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets the score 7 out of 10.
